Playwright August Wilson grew up in the Hill District and, during the 1980’s, wrote a series of 10 plays known as the the “Pittsburgh Cycle”.

There have also been reports that Washington funded a group of acting students from Howard University to study at a summer abroad program at Oxford University. Washington has however paved the way in the telling of African American stories not just as an actor but as a producer and director as well. His body of work as an actor has not only inspired actors of color but his artistic work has become a gold standard in the industry. The telling of his stories are an important step for progress and diversity in storytelling. Wilson's stories uplift the ordinary people who just so happen to be African American. It's great to see the plays of August Wilson finally arrive on film.
Great playwrights like Arthur Miller and Edward Albee has seen their plays The Crucible and Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf respectively adapted into films. In the past, we have seen some great adaptions of plays turned into films.
